Update on Future Projects

Hi guys,

This is just an update on my future stuff.

1.       Darkness Breaks (Darkness Falls Series, Book 2) is set to release June 5th.

2.       The Lost Souls (Fallen Souls Series, Book 1) which is a spin-off of the Fallen Star Series will be out sometime at the end of June. This series is a new story featuring the characters Gemma, Alex, Laylen, and Aislin. I’m not sure yet how many books will be in the series.

3.       I just put in an order for some key chains, t-shirts, bags ect. so keep an eye out for some fun giveaways.

4.       The Fallen Star Series is getting a makeover! As much as I love my covers, I wanted to give them a more title related look. So Regina at Mae I Design is working on some new covers and I can’t wait to share them with you guys.

5.       I’ll be releasing a new series at the end of July-beginning of August; Ember (Death Collectors Series, Book 1). On top of that, I’m working on a YA Contemporary Romance book called The Secret of Ella and Micha. As much as I love the YA paranormal/fantasy genre, about half of the books I read are YA Contemporary Romance. So I’m giving it a try. The cover, release date, and blurb will be released soon.

Meet the Author and Giveaway!

Hi everyone,
I'd like to introduce you to Kelly Carrero, author of Evolution.
I'm also holding a giveaway for Kelly. The winner will recieve an ebook (kindle format) of Evolution. To enter, just comment on this post. I'll randomly pick a winner June 1st.

Can you tell us about your book, Evolution?
The story is about a 17 year old girl called Jade Harris, who discovers she is one of the few humans who have taken the next step in the evolution of the human species. She has a mother who is rarely there for her, and a father that may as well have just been a sperm donor. The only person who is really there for Jade, is her boyfriend Aiden Scott who is also like her. After finding out what she really is, Jade also has to find her best friend who has been kidnapped by the psycho who is responsible for her terrifying visions. Jade is yet to discover that she is caught up in a sick game to find out what she is truly capable of.

Where did you get the idea for Evolution?
Its a funny story actually. I came up with the idea during a year 10 English exam. We were given various black & white pictures where we had to pick one, and start writing a story about what the picture says to us. Well I picked a picture of a black bird that looked to me like a raven, sitting in what I thought was a noose, and began this story. After reading it out in class (and everyone loving it), my teacher gave me a F because of the topic I had chosen. Apparently it was a canary sitting in it's swing & there was no place for death in a Christian School. The story had stayed in my thoughts for over 10 years, and after I had my son, I finally had the time to finish what I started all those years ago.

How many books will be in the series?
I'm not entirely sure yet. There will definitely be 3 but possibly a 4th.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Actually when I won my first writing competition in grade 3 I thought that was what I wanted to do, but then things changed and some how I ended up in the finance industry where I was a Business Development Manager before I had my son.

Are there any future projects you are working on?
Besides the sequel to Evolution, I have also started writing another series about Vamps, Demons ect. that is a lot darker than the Evolution series.

What kind of books do you like to read? Do you have a favorite book?
Apart from yours (hehehe), I would have to say the Vampire Academy series. I absolutely love YA, so much so that I haven't picked up another genre in the past 4 years.

What is your favorite snack?
I'm usually not one for snacking but if I had to say something that I can't help myself but consume, it would definitely be coffee.

What is your favorite movie? This is a hard one, there are so many movies I love. At the moment I would have to say Fast n Furious series (except #3 - 'cause not sure what the hell they were doing with that one).

If you could have any supernatural power which would you choose and why?
If I had to answer honestly, I think it would be mind control abilities, because let's face it, who wouldn't want to get whatever they want.

A little teaser from The Lost Soul!

I stifle a smile, touch the star on his wrist, and brush my lips over his, giving him a quick kiss. I lean back, but his hand cups the back of my neck and he deepens the kiss. His tongue slides in my mouth and my whole body shivers. His chest presses against mine and our legs tangle together. I choke my anxiousness down and clutch the hem of his shirt as roll onto my back.
He shifts over me, rising up on his elbows, licking his lips, wanting more.
“You said we were just going to sleep,” I joke, my nerves jumbled together.

“You want me to stop?”

“Not yet.” I seal my lips to his.
We stay that way until the sun rises, breaking through the clouds and silencing the storm. As I drift to sleep, cuddled against to him, I can’t help but think how beautiful the moment is. But it’s fleeting and soon I’m consumed with a dark thought.
What if our forever has a loophole?

Guest Post with Author Jessica Therrien

Hi everyone,
I'd like you to meet Jessica Therrien, author of Oppression. We did something that we call the "Jessica Swap" and switched blogs for the day. So here is some information and her and her books, along with some great writing tips.

Jessica Therrien is the author of the young adult paranormal fiction series Children of the Gods. Book one in the series, Oppression, was published by ZOVA Books in February of 2012.

Aside from her Children of the Gods series, Jessica’s work can also be found in a published collection of flash fiction stories called
Campaigner Challenges 2011. Out of over 350 submissions her story, The Soulless, won first place for people’s choice and fourth place in the judging round of Rachael Harrie’s Writing Campaign Challenge. Her story, Saved, is also available as part of the anthology.
Jessica spent most of her life in the small town of Chilcoot, California, high up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In this town of nearly 100 residents, with no street lights or grocery stores, there was little to do but find ways to be creative. Her mother, the local English teacher, inspired her to do all things artistic, and ultimately instilled in her a love for language.

In 2003, Jessica attended California State University Long Beach where her passion for language found her studying Chinese, and in 2005 she moved to Taiwan to study abroad. From 2005 to 2006 Jessica was fully immersed in the Chinese language as she attended National Taiwan University, and in 2008 she graduated from San Diego State University magna cum laude.

Jessica currently lives in Chula Vista with her husband, and is working on book two in her Children of the Gods series.

Elyse knows what it means to keep a secret. She's been keeping secrets her whole life. Two, actually. First, that she ages five times slower than the average person, so that while she looks eighteen years old, she's closer to eighty. Second, that her blood has a mysterious power to heal. For Elyse, these things don't make her special. They make life dangerous. After the death of her parents, she's been careful to keep her secret as closely guarded as possible. Now, only one other person in the world knows about her age and ability. Or so she thinks. Elyse is not the only one keeping secrets. There are others like her all over the world, descendants of the very people the Greeks considered gods. She is one of them, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. Among so many of her kind, she should not be very remarkable--except for the prophecy. Some believe she will put an end to traditions, safeguarded by violence, which have oppressed her people for centuries. Others are determined to keep her from doing just that. But for Elyse, the game is just beginning--and she's not entirely willing to play by their rules.

Hello! I’m Jessica Therrien, author of Oppression (Children of the Gods #1). Thanks so much to the other Jessica AKA owner of this blog/best-selling author/awesome lady for having me on for this guest post! We’re sort of taking over each other’s websites for today. Super fun, right? Just think of it as a Jessica swap…

I was asked to talk about something all of us writers get emails about…tips on writing. So, for today’s post I’ve developed a little “Rules on Writing” checklist.

Rules on Writing

1.        There are no rules.

Haha! Okay, so there are some (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.) but in terms of writing style…the how, the when, the what…that’s up to you. No writer’s process is the same.

2.       Write when you’re inspired. Don’t wait.

This is my biggest, most important, rule. If I get an idea or the scenes/dialogue start to pop into my head in that perfect way, I stop what I’m doing and write. Even if it’s on a napkin or a receipt in my black-hole of a purse. As long as you get it out, it doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re writing on. Capturing that piece of magic is key. You can fix/edit/transpose it later.

3.       Let the characters decide what happens.

I’ve tried to outline (and hey…maybe outlining really works well for you…that’s good) but my creative brain doesn’t like to stay on the straight and narrow. Sometimes I’ll be writing the scene I planned to write, and something feels forced or wrong, like it’s what I want to happen, no necessarily what’s supposed to happen. Sometimes the universe has other plans for your characters. Let them go where they want. A lot of the time it’s a lot more interesting than you’d expect.

4.       Use real life.

The best way I’ve found to create “real” characters are to base them on people I know…at least at first. Once I have a basis for the character, they start to evolve on their own and grow into who they are. For me, the best way to make a scene or a character genuine is to use pieces of my memory to create well-rounded fiction.

*Also, it’s important to know why your characters make the decisions they do, so don’t be afraid to explore their past, even if those scenes or writing exercises don’t make it into your manuscript. They help mold the character’s personality.

5.       Write the scenes you’re excited about.

When I first started writing, I used to think writing in order was the “right” way to write. I also thought it was the easiest. That actually turned out to be wrong for me. I write COMPLETELY out of order. I write whichever scene I’m excited about, and in the end, each scene is the best it can be because it was written with passion instead of force. You don’t want to force yourself to write a scene just because it’s next…that’s a really good way to stifle the process and run into writer’s block (at least that’s what happens with me).

So there you have it. Five fun rules on writing that are in no way actual rules, but more tips or fun-facts about the way I do things. I hope you enjoyed them! Here is the link to the other Jessica’s post on my blog: http://jessicatherrien.com/.

Update

A quick update;
First on the list is Darkness Breaks (Darkness Falls Series, Book 2). I got a little behind schedule so Darkness Breaks will release about a week later than planned. Sorry guys L But I’ll be giving away a few arc’s to make up for it.

Next on my release list is The Lost Soul (Fallen Souls Series, Book 1), a spin-off of the Fallen Star Series. I’m sooo excited to take Gemma, Alex, Laylen, Aislin, and even Nicholas on a new adventure. The expected release date is at the end of June. I’ll post some teasers over the next few weeks J

I mentioned doing character chats a while ago, and from the responses, it looks like people want to hear from Gemma, Alex, Laylen, and Nicholas. I’m working on getting a chat room set up on my blog and then I’ll get a schedule posted.

Also, I have a guest post on Jessica Therrien’s blog tomorrow: http://jessica-therrien.blogspot.com/. I talk about self-publishing and why I choose to go Indie. I thought I’d share this bit of info just in case anyone wanted to check it out. And Jessica’s going to be featured on my blog. She gives some fun writing tips so you might want to drop in tomorrow.

Darkness Breaks Teaser!

“Kayla, just breathe” Aiden whispers, his honey eyes filled with worry. Chains bind him to the blood-stained wall. “You can do it, just breathe.”
I lie on my back, my body pumped full of various medicines. Needles implant my skin and every muscle in body screams. I’m burning up, my skin as hot as fire. I shut my eyes, panting, wanting to get up, but the pain constraints m...
e to the concrete floor.
“I want to die,” I murmur. There’s a knife by Aiden’s ankle. “I can’t take this anymore. Aiden, please just kill me.”
He shakes his head and kicks the knife to the side. “I won’t do it Kayla. I love you too much.”
I cough up blood and it drowns my lungs. Tears slip down my cheeks as the medicine eats away at my heart, my mind, my skin. It’s been going on for days, maybe even weeks, a test which we’re failing. “Aiden, I can’t take it anymore. Please.”
He slides onto his stomach until the chains reach the end. He extends his hand and his fingers brush the tips of mine. “I won’t let you go,” he whispers. “I love you too much.”
I feel his love burning through his blood and at that moment, part of me loves him back. But part of me hates him for loving me so much that he’d rather see me suffer than let me go. And for a brief second, I wish he was Sylas. Because Sylas wouldn’t watch me suffer.

A fun, late night Darkness Breaks Teaser!

We continue to stare each other down, even when Emmy clears her throat.
“Guys,” she says. “I think we need to get out of here. Morning’s coming.”
Sylas shakes his head. “Not until we settle this.” He spreads his hands to the side. “You want to know if I’m lying, then go ahead and see.”
I eye him over. “You’re just going to let me tap into you.”
He tilts his head to the side. “Consider this your one and only freebie.”
I glance at Emmy, who shrugs, looking just as astounded as I am.
“I don’t know what to tell you,” she says. “He surprises me every day.”
Still uncertain, I reach for him, but he pulls back.
“Oh, I’m not going to make it easy on you.” He licks his lips.
I remain immobile, hand suspend in midair. I don’t know what my problem is. It’s just a kiss and I’ve kissed him before, but something about it feels wrong. Or maybe it’s that deep down part of me wants to kiss him.
For a second, I considered kicking him between the legs. But not wanting him to know he’s getting to me, I keep my head and shoulders held high, my gaze never faltering as I lean in. “Alright, Sylas, if that’s the way you want to play, then let’s play.” Without indication, I press my lips to his, a dominating move as I clutch onto the upper hand.
He’s not influencing my emotions, which is making the situation worse. All of it’s raw; the way he feels, the way I feel, the way our lips connect. Kissing him is so much different than kissing Aiden. Aiden is open and his emotions pour out effortlessly. There’s something safe in Aiden’s touch. But when Sylas opens up, it’s like falling into an abyss.

Darkness Breaks Teaser!

“You feel too much.” Sylas props his foot up on the ledge of the roof. “You’re going to have to turn it off, or else it’s going to get the best of you.”

“Is that what you do?” I meet his eyes, my hair dusting my cheeks as the wind howls. “Do you turn it off Sylas? Is your uncaring behavior just an act?”

His eyes never waver and his eyebrows rise with a challenge. “You te...ll me. After all, you do know me better than anyone. At least you used to.”

His gaze makes me nervous, like it always does whenever he sneaks into my emotions. From behind us, Tristan moans and Emmy snarls, but I don’t let my eyes cower away from Sylas. The longer I focus on him, the less unsettled my body feels. I feel a newfound surge of energy, one that wants answers, one that knows I’m about to cross a dangerous line. In a quick shooting motion, I snap my hand up and grab onto Sylas’ arm. I grip tightly, digging my nails into his skin. He’s surprised, eyes
blinking wildly, like no one has ever touched him without permission. For one brief second, his guard and control crumbles. A window opens, revealing a small insight into his soul. He’s always afraid… always afraid of failing, of letting people in, of being human, yet at the same time, he fears he’s lost all of his humanity.

“An act,” I say boldly.

His eyes flare and his lips curl, allowing his teeth to dangerously glint in the night. I worry he might shove me off the roof and let me fall to my death. And maybe he would have, if Tristan hadn’t beat him to the punch.

As the blow of Emmy’s scream slams against my eardrums, Tristan’s body crashes into mine. Our bodies tangle as we fly airborne, off the edge of the roof, and plummet to the ground, toward my death. I shut my eyes. But I feel something sparkle against my head and my eyelids whip open to Tristan’s smile. He has one hand on my head and the other on my hip.

“Don’t forget me,” he says and the sparkles in my head ignite, and I can feel everything he’s ever felt.

It’s the most powerful thing I’ve ever felt and I’ll never be able to forget it.

Then he releases me, only a few feet from the ground.

Author Interview and Giveaway!

Hi everyone, I'd like you to meet Chelsea Cameron, author of The Noctalis Chronicles.

Nocturnal will be on sale for 99 cents on Sunday!

I'm also holding a giveaway for Chelsea, so make sure to check out the details of the giveaway at the end of this post!

Author Bio:
Chelsea M. Cameron is a YA writer from Maine. Lover of things random and ridiculous, Jane Austen/Charlotte and Emily Bronte Fangirl, red velvet cake enthusiast, obsessive tea drinker, vegetarian, former cheerleader, world's worst video gamer and contributor to YA Indie. When not writing, she enjoys watching infomercials, vacuuming and tweeting. She has a degree in journalism from the University of Maine, Orono that she promptly abandoned to write about the people in her own head.
Can you tell us about your books?
Nocturnal, which is out now is a story about a girl named Ava who has a mother dying of cancer, a tenuous relationship with her father and a growing attraction to a boy who isn't human. It's a series about love and loss and what it means to be human. It also features a snarky best friend named Texas, cemeteries, earth-shattering cheesecake, flying, promises, and there might be some kissing in there, too :) The first two books, Nocturnal and Nightmare are out. This is a four-book series and the third book, Numb should be out in July/August, with the final book coming out in the late fall.
My next book, Whisper is set to release June 6, and is the first in a trilogy. It's a lot lighter than The Noctalis Chronicles, and features a girl who is alive, a boy who is not, and a mission to deliver a message from beyond the grave. It's also about sisters and family and what you would do for the ones you love.
Where did you get the idea for The Noctalis Chronicles?
This is going to sound crazy, but I had my very first inkling of an idea after watching an ad for Desperate Housewives. They showed and image of a woman plucking an apple from a tree. I don't know why, but this triggered an image of this guy with long black hair that covered his eyes. That was my first image of Peter, and he's been the same ever since. I had that idea back in 2009, but didn't start writing it until 2011 when the story wouldn't leave me alone.
How many books will there be in the series?
Four in this series, and four in the Whisper series, which includes a companion novella.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
No! If you asked me fourth grade if I would ever want to be a writer, I would have screamed that and run away. I HATED writing in school. But I've loved books since I was old enough to understand what they were. I'm an only child, and I live in a very rural area. I was also an outcast in school (not to be a Debbie Downer), and books were my escape. I can honestly say that they saved my life. I thought of authors as amazing, magical people who occupied a special space that mere humans couldn't visit. Like angels or wizards. They lived apart from Normal People. I don't know where I came up with this idea, but I held onto it until seventh grade. I had a teacher who encouraged me, and she got me to sign up for Honors English, and I figured out I was actually pretty good at writing.
Fast forward to making college decisions and I went with journalism (print, specifically) because I couldn't stomach the teasing that goes along with being an English major. (No offense to English majors. You guys are braver than I was) So there I was, writing articles like crazy and I was enjoying it, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted to do. I confessed to my dad that I wanted to write books and he told me to go for it. So I started one and didn't finish it. I wrote another. And rewrote it. And rewrote it. For four years. I discovered there was nothing more I wanted to do than write books all day, every day.
And that concludes my long-winded response to how I became a writer.
Are there any future projects you are working on?
Whisper is proving to be more difficult than I anticipated. I'm confident I can get it out for June 6, but there are going to be a lot of late nights. I'll finish this year with all four books in The Noctalis Chronicles and all three books in the Whisper series being released. I've started planning my writing for 2013 and they include a contemporary, a dystopian and another paranormal romance. I'm not stopping anytime soon :)
What kind of books do you like to read? Do you have a favorite book?
What kind of books don't I like to read? Actually, I have an answer for that. Textbooks. I hate those. As for genres, I love, love, love YA. That's where my heart is. Because honestly, I'm still a 17-year-old girl inside. There is something so magical about YA and I can't get enough of it. Some of my faves are: Twilight (oh yes, I'll admit it), The Hunger Games, Ella Enchanted, Harry Potter, Dearly,Departed, Obsidian, Callum & Harper, Jenny Pox... I'll stop there.
When I'm not in YA-land, I read a ton of classics. Jane Austen, the Brontes, etc. I love Victorian Gothic stuff. I also read as many books about writing as I can. I'm also fond of quirky non-fiction books about interesting things. I loved The Botany of Desire. And I think Gone with the Wind and To Kill A Mockingbird are the two greatest books of all time.
What is your favorite snack?
Chocolate is pretty much my religion. White is my absolute fave, because it's basically pure chocolate fat, but I love all chocolates. I do not discriminate. One of my fave writing snacks is graham crackers with Nutella on one side, and Fluff on the other. Instant s'more, no fire required!
What is your favorite movie?
It's a tie between Gone with the Wind and Anne of Green Gables. I could watch those two movies every day for the rest of my life and be happy.
If you could have any supernatural power which would you choose and why?
I've gotta go with apparition. For those non-Harry Potter people (do such people exist?), it's the ability to travel from one place to another in an instant. You'd never be late for anything and you'd save so much money on airline tickets and gas money.

To enter the giveaway, simply make a comment to this post by May 12, 2012. I will randomly select two lucky winners who will win an ebook of Nocturnal!

Meet the Author

Hey everyone,
I'd like you to meet my husban'ds cousin, who recently self-published her first novel, Mere Enchantment.
Also, if you're an author and you'd like me to hold an interview, please send me an email and I'll arrange one.

Can you tell us a little about your book?
When a newly formed group of friends finds themselves fighting for survival, little did they know that was just the beginning.
When Chloe, Megan, Jason and Zach are forced to take cover in a nearby cave from a violent storm they find their new friend Preston there as well. Zach guides the group through the cave but as they go deeper strange things begin to happen and they find themselves separated in a magical kingdom surrounded by unusual people and wizards. Things get even more dangerous as they travel the kingdom in search of the city of Mere and each other.
As their journey unfolds, Preston discovers that the bedtime stories he was told as a child are true and that his rightful place in time must be realized. The kingdom itself has gone under attack as Jacan, a traitor to the crown, forces his armies through the magical borders.
Looking back Preston should have recognized that it was all real. He should have seen the signs. But how could he have known? After all, Jacan was just a villain in a story that took place in a far off mystical land. How could he have imagined that the stories that his father told him as a child were true?
How could any of them have known that their destinies were already written, and that to discover who they really are would take courage that they never realized they had?
Where did you get the idea for this book?
This story came to me as I was lying in bed one night. I knew that it would make a great little story, but never expected it to
turn into what it has become.

Is this book part of a series? If so, how many books will there be?
Mere Enchantment is the first book in The Enchantment Series. I am currently working on the 2nd installment, but I'm not sure
yet if it will be the last book.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
No. Growing up I thought I would do many things, but writing a book was never one of them. Things changed when I got older
and I realized that I loved to read, and would love to be able to write my own story for the world to read.
What kind of books do you like to read? Do you have a favorite book?
I love any book that can catch my interest. I'm a big fan of Twilight, Harry Potter, Fablehaven, etc... but I also love a good clean
romance, like Nicholas Sparks, and Richard Paul Evan's books. I'm not sure I can tell you my favorite book, there are to many
to choose from.

What is your favorite snack?
I love Caramello candy bars. There is just something about chocolate and caramel that makes the perfect combination.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite comedy has to be "Robing Hood, Men in Tights" that movie is hilarious. I also like "How to Lose a Guy in 10
Days"
If you could have any supernatural power which would you choose and why?
I have always thought having magic would be the awesome. With a flick of my wrist, I could do anything I wanted, like have
my house cleaned for me in an instant.
